Snack Swaps: Mini Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers

Okay fine I admit it- I was a total junk food snacker growing up (snacking is sort of my thing..). So trust me, I know how you feel when  you say “but it’s just not as good as the real thing” to yourself when trying to lay off the junk.

Well lucky for you, aside from ingredients, flavor and taste have the most weight when I evaluate products to recommend for our clients. Bottom line: If it tastes bad, it’s out.

This week, I’m introducing you to the “better for you” peanut butter sandwich crackers. I’m sure many of you remember Ritz Bits, those awesome mini crackers that come in individual bags that you just pop into your mouth during class.. throwback thursday?

Well let’s check out the ingredient list…

Ingredients: unbleached enriched flour (wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate {vitamin b1}, riboflavin {vitamin b2}, folic acid), peanut butter (peanuts, hydrogenated rapeseed and/or cottonseed and/or soybean oils, salt and peanut oil), soybean oil, sugar, dextrose, partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil, high fructose corn syrup, salt, leavening (baking soda and/or calcium phosphate), soy lecithin, malted barley flour.

I’m not going to get too into this, just the worst part- and yes I did just bold “partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil”- this should scream trans fat to you, the worst kind for your hearts and arteries…. you do NOT want to be putting that into your body.. or vessels..

Say Hello to its cleaned up version, Late July Organic Mini Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers

Ingredients: Organic wheat flour, organic peanut butter (dry roasted organic peanuts, organic palm oil, organic sugar, salt), organic oleic safflower oil and/or organic oleic sunflower oil, organic evaporated cane juice, organic palm oil, sea salt, leavening (baking soda, cream of tartar), soy lecithin (an emulsifier).

Now that’s better.. and I’m sure I don’t need to tell you why

Taste is comes pretty close to the real deal…minus the trans fat.

You can find Late July’s products in The Food Emporium, Fairway Market, and Gristedes around the city.

Happy Better Snacking,

Joanna
