Smart Swaps: Halloween Edition- Gummy Bears

This is dedicated to those who just wish for Halloween candy beyond M&Ms and Skittles. And just maybe, MAYBE there is a better choice..without the artificial colors and um, garbage? Well lucky for you guys, the answer is yes. Welcome to smart swaps, Halloween edition.

I used to be a huge candy junkie. Halloween was one of my favorite holidays because in one night, I would collect enough candy to last me for months. Hershey Kisses, Twizzlers, Sour patch kids, Reese’s, Nerds, I loved them all. However, my favorite out of the bunch were GUMMY BEARS!! And before I started reading the ingredient list of packaged foods, I inhaled those gummy bears down. As I began to really paid attention to what I was putting into my body, I found out I was eating something pretty close to sh*t.

Eek Yellow 5, Red 40 (most widely used dye) and Blue 1!!

Artificial colorings are a no-no. They have been banned in other countries because they have been shown to pose many health concerns including tumors, behavioral effects, chromosomal damage, and hyperactivity. I can go on but here a pretty good summary from the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Let’s just say you do not want to be putting this into your body. So luckily, I found Surf Sweets, which makes gummy bears from natural ingredients including black carrot juice, turmeric, annatto. Candy is still candy (so think sugar) but if you’re going to have it once in a while, it is nice to know you don’t need to resort to just the food dye stuff.

I love gummy bears but if you’re an M&Ms kind of person, Unreal Candy is where it’s at. No artificial colors, no corn syrup, no partially hydrogenated oils….you can read more about it here!

What are your favorite Halloween candies? When is it too old to go trick or treating..?

Have a safe and junk-free Halloween,

Joanna
